Liege tops European crime list

BRUSSELS, Belgium (UPI) -- The European Commission says the Belgian city of Liege is one of Europe`s most dangerous cities.
Liege recorded the highest number of registered crimes per 1,000 residents in 2001, Expatica reported.
The EC comparative audit found that 256 crimes per 1,000 residents were recorded in Liege that year.
Utrecht, Netherlands had 230, Stockholm and Goteborg, Sweden, had 204 and Hamburg had 184, the newspaper De Standaard reported.
Other Belgian cities also recorded high crime rates, with Brussels registering 153 crimes per 1,000 residents, Charleroi 144 and Antwerp 117.
Liege judicial authorities raised doubts about the comparative methods used by the EC, pointing out that the city`s crime rate has sharply declined in recent years, Expatica said.
